Desperation can set in during a crisis like a cancer battle. It did during my Stage IV cancer battle. We really need God’s favor then and always, and please know He wants us to boldly ask for help!
We may think He owes us a favor – entitlement. So we complain, manipulate, and bargain. We may think we only deserve punishment from Him – shame. So we hide, beat ourselves up, and give in to despair. Yet there is a freeing Bible passage which resolves both of these errors.
Hebrews 4:16 – Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence (or boldness), so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Mercy is not getting what we deserve. Grace is getting what we don’t deserve.
We desperately need mercy and grace and Jesus opened the ONLY way to God for us (more on how here)! Yet we can slip into entitlement and shame instead of grace and mercy as the basis for our standing before God. We need to stay under Jesus’ last words on the cross, “It is finished,” or tetelestai in the Greek. This is an accounting term archaeologists have found stamped on paid-off loan documents! Our debt has been paid off forever in Jesus! He loves us and wants to meet our needs!
