Jesus Came to Mend Our Broken Hearts!

Hands Holding Broken Heart - Quotation from Isaiah 61:1 "...He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted..."

Some know all too well that heartbreak can seem worse at Christmas. Yet the One whose birth we celebrate understands and knows exactly how to fix a broken heart! In fact, He states upfront that mending broken hearts was a main goal in His coming (Isaiah 61:1 – repeated in Luke 4)!

“Wait,” you say, “Jesus was God; does He really understand a broken heart?” He sure does, and here is why:

  • He created us … and our feelings. He knows exactly how they work!
  • He Himself is described as a “man of sorrows” in Isaiah 53:3!
  • He was brokenhearted – over Jerusalem’s resistance; Lazarus’ death; His own death; and His Father forsaking Him on the cross!

The Bible identifies several heart-breakers:

  • Sickness – “The spirit of a man can endure his sickness, But as for a broken spirit who can bear it? – Proverbs 18:14
  • Shunning – Reproach has broken my heart and I am so sick. And I looked for sympathy, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.”Psalm 69:20
  • Sorrow“Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” – Proverbs 13:12.

I have experienced heart break from all of these, including my Stage IV cancer battle. I learned the antidote for a broken heart is HOPE. Paul the Apostle experienced a ton of heart breakers and beautifully captures how “The God of all comfort” works to comfort and bring hope in the midst of suffering.

Romans 5:3-5 – “And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

He knows it’s hard, but don’t ever give up hope! This Christmas, lean in long and hard to the One Who still mends broken hearts today!
