Five Keys to Victory in Any Battle – #5 – The Name of Jesus

In 2003, I was in the hospital for high dose Interleukin-2 immunotherapy to battle Stage IV metastatic melanoma. During the first week-long treatment, the nursing care was fine, and with such a rough treatment there wasn’t much they could do anyway … or so I thought.

During my second round, a very caring and well-placed relative paid a visit. She was a top Nurse Administrator, not just over that hospital, but over the large hospital chain. She wrote three letters on my hospital chart – VIP. She signed her name, and my care suddenly and drastically improved. Nurses swarmed my room; 20-minute massages; total access to the top secret “nurse refrigerator”; extra soft pillows and heated blankets were everywhere. I experienced the kindest, most encouraging care of my lifetime. A nurse cornered my sister in the hallway, “So who is he?” My sister said, “Sorry, I can’t tell you.”

They didn’t recognize my name, but they sure knew my relative’s name! The same goes for Jesus’ Mighty Name! Sometimes people ask, “Why should God listen to my prayers?” Well, because we “name drop” Jesus, that’s why! Using Jesus’ name in prayer is far from a phrase signaling the end of a prayer, but don’t take my word for it, consider Jesus’ own words:

“Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.” John 16:24

“Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. – John 14:13

“If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.” – John 14:14

“These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” – Mark 16:17-18

In addition, get this, even people who “never knew” Jesus, and who will not even be accepted into heaven will do miracles in His Name:

“Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’” – Matthew 7:22

How much more should we who take Jesus as our Savior use His name! Am I promoting a Genie lamp, vending machine approach to God? This is anecdotal, but after my Jewish doctor told me I had days to live in 2003, I said, “I could outlive you!” He responded, “That’s possible, but not likely, although you Christians definitely have something with the whole Jesus thing. I’ve had so many Christians come into my office with horrible cancer and say, Jesus is going to heal me – and it happens.” Wow!

Sometimes we over think what God asks and invites us to do, I say to myself, “Just do it.”

Lord, thanks for Your promise that asking in Jesus’ Name carries much weight with You!
